Fall Tips from Precision
- If you want to protect your hot water system from possible freezing during power outages then now is the time to add propylene glycol. ForĀ areas of your heating system that are just vulnerable to freezing, glycol may be the best investment you've ever made.
- Your furnace/boiler should be tuned up yearly. If it isn't, change your filter and oil your blower motor or pump.
- Leave your heat on at 60 degrees if you leave home in the winter. If you have areas where piping might be exposed to cold enough to freeze, properly insulate the pipes.
- Proper insulation of walls, ceilings, crawl spaces and pipes will save energy and expensive repairs.
- Check to see that windows are caulked and doors have weather stripping on the bottom.
- Call us for a heating upgrade with a high efficiency boiler or furnace.
- Test your furnace before it gets cold
- Replace or clean your furnace filters
- If possible, insulate any pipes and heating ducts that run through unheated crawlspaces or attics
- Turn off all interior valves for each outdoor faucet and open the outdoor faucet.
- Remove, drain and store garden hoses
- Replace batteries in flashlights in case of power outages
- It is better to clean your gutters several times rather than waiting until the end of fall
- Test your basement sump pump Replace batteries and test all smoke detectors
- We recommend installing smoke detectors that are also carbon monoxide detectors
- Make sure your house number is well lit and clearly legible from the street
- Consider outdoor security lighting
